INVITATION TO ATTEND THE LAUNCH OF STATE OF WORLD POPULATION 2019 REPORT.

INVITATION TO ATTEND THE LAUNCH OF STATE OF WORLD POPULATION 2019 REPORT.

The Department of Social Development, Chief Directorate: Population and Development and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) hereby wish to invite you to participate at the launch of State of World Population 2019 report. The launch will be held in Pretoria at -:

Venue : Burgers Park Hotel
Streets : Corner Lilian Ngoyi & Minnaar
Date : 10 April 2019

UNFPA prepares a global report on State of World to sensitise the population at large of priority issues affecting the dynamics of the global population. UNFPA collaborates with different member States of the United Nations to organise a simultaneous launch of the report in different countries of the world. The report will be launched globally on 10 April 2019.

The theme for this year’s report is “Unfinished Business; The pursuits of rights and choices for all.” The report makes the case that despite the increasing availability of contraceptives over the years, hundreds of million women today still have no access to them and to the reproductive choices that come with them.

Without access, they lack the power to make decisions about their own bodies including whether or when to become pregnant. The lack of these power, which influences so many other facets of life, from education to income to safety, leaves women unable to shape their own future.

Please do inform us if you are available to participate to enable us to make the necessary arrangements. Our contact numbers are as follows-:

Your participation in this regard will be highly appreciated.

BRICS 2018 IN South Africa

South Africa’s membership of the BRICS is a vital element of the country’s international strategy. In recent years BRICS has increasingly been recognised as a new institution of global governance. What makes it unique is the fact that five developing nations from diverse regions have managed to institutionalise a multi-lateral platform of global governance that aims to provide mutual support for the nations to achieve both their internal/domestic developmental objectives, as well as shared objectives in terms of international relations.

The BRICS can be approached as a catalyst, and enabling tool, for the pursuit and achievement of South Africa’s NDP goals and foreign policy priorities, including the realisation of goals of the NDP, promotion of the African Agenda, sustainable development, and global governance reform.

The relevance of BRICS and its uniqueness in 2018 can be seen in a context of growing threats of trade wars, isolationism (e.g. BREXIT), trade protectionism, and anti-integrationist movements (as seen in recent EU elections).

Hosted in South Africa under the theme “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution,” the 10th Summit provides a strategic platform for South Africa to expose BRICS partners to a dynamic, and diverse experience on the Southern tip of the African continent.

Abortion & Reproductive Justice: The Unfinished Revolution III

Abortion & Reproductive Justice: The Unfinished Revolution III

The Critical Studies in Sexualities and Reproduction, Rhodes University, the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition (South Africa), and the International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe Abortion, in partnership with the Department of Social Development (South African government) and a range of international partners will co-host the Abortion & Reproductive Justice: The Unfinished Revolution III .

The conference builds on two previous conferences with the same name held in Canada in August 2014, and in Northern Ireland in July 2016. The aim of this third iteration is to bring the conversation, scholarship, and exploration of issues and activism to those living in jurisdictions where abortion access is highly restricted, while at the same time hearing from scholars, activists and service providers from across the globe.

The conference was held at the Rhodes University, Barratt Lecture Complex, from 8th July 2018 (Sunday) - 12th July 2018 (Thursday)
